Ideally in this final film, she would kill off all other versions of herself, because that’s the only way I am going to accept that this franchise is over. ![]() Rachel: For this reason, I have to believe that this franchise is going to continue and eventually wrap up with Vanessa Hudgens playing herself. And the movie doesn’t even introduce a third person who looks exactly like Vanessa! I hoped that the number of Vanessas in each film would increase algorithmically, or ideally geometrically, with each new Princess Switch, and felt robbed to see them cap out at three. The movie maneuvers a conceit where Margaret and Stacy have to go back and work with Fiona, which means that eventually Vanessa has to play Margaret and Stacy impersonating Fiona, but Fiona pretty much just stays herself. Jackson: To start, I just have to say this Princess Switch installment simply did not include enough switching. While the previous two movies were more in the rom-com vein, this one is definitely trying to be Ocean’s Eleven, except with a crew made up only of Vanessas Hudgens. But when the precious Star of Peace, on loan from the Vatican, is stolen, they have to rely on blonde party-girl Vanessa Hudgens Fiona to get it back. In this sequel, the Chicagoan Vanessa Hudgens Stacy and the aristocratic Vanessa Hudgens Margaret are hosting a big Christmas event in the country of Montenaro. Since we have previously gotten together to discuss Vanessa’s efforts in The Princess Switch: Switched Again as well as the allegedly unaffiliated The Knight Before Christmas, we felt it was only natural to continue our inquiry into what exactly is going on here.īut first, some basic plot info. DeMille’s mistress’s house, and possible collection of clones has returned to her great cinematic project on Netflix with The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, the third installment in a series of films about obscure European monarchies and the mutability of human identity. Unfortunately, I sort of can’t wait to see what high jinks they get up to.Christmastime is upon us once again, and therefore, so, too, is Vanessa Hudgens. ![]() But given this nascent holiday trend of extending the Princess Switch cinematic universe, I fear we may soon have to contend with four Vanessas in order to complete the trilogy. As the saying goes: Two’s company, three’s a crowd. Is your brain leaking from your ears yet? I haven’t even mentioned the multiple romantic entanglements and thorny transnational political conflicts that arise when three women who look exactly the same serve as separate heads of state and are inclined to swap places to attend to their personal lives. More switching takes place, until the bad Vanessa is switched into oblivion, and the remaining Vanessas are reunited with their respective boyfriends and kingdoms. Why would Stacy and Margaret switch again? Well, the latter needed time to rekindle her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, an ultrahot normie single dad named Kevin, before taking over the kingdom of Montenaro and becoming super busy. In a classic Netflix-and-Hudgensian fashion, it turns out the kidnappee isn’t really Lady Margaret, but Stacy. Nefarious Lady Fiona plots to steal the throne by kidnapping Lady Margaret and taking her place. But how could one improve on the original? The answer is that this film has added a third Vanessa Hudgens character: Lady Margaret’s evil cousin, Lady Fiona, who is distinguished from the other Vanessas by means of a blonde wig and Topshop holiday wear. And now, we have the long-awaited sequel to her 2018 hit: the straightforwardly named The Princess Switch: Switched Again. Then, last year, we were treated to The Knight Before Christmas, in which Hudgens plays a high-school science teacher who falls for a time-traveling medieval knight. This storied collaboration began with 2018’s The Princess Switch, in which Hudgens plays a humble baker from Chicago named Stacy, who switches places with an obscure and glamorous royal, Lady Margaret of Montenaro (also played by Hudgens). ![]() When it comes to big-money Netflix deals, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vanessa Hudgens, of High School Musical fame, has the best one: Every year, seemingly without fail, Netflix serves us a fresh Vanessa Hudgens holiday romp, and this year was no exception.
